Surfin’ Safari Woody I had this 41 Woodys in the junkyard that I had previously cut off the front end for another project and decided to make something out of it. My first and foremost thought was to reach for the knife…..and so I did. I wanted to make a Beach Boys surfing theme car. Then I cut off the roof and chopped the piece above the cab. I cut off the rear window part of the roof and added it to the rear roof of the cab. I pondered this for a few days and decided the vehicle was too long. I then cut off most of the rear door and put it back together. This looked much better. I also did some intense frame work and decided to keep the chrome reverse wheels. I scratch built a matching surf board (not in the picture). Here is a mock up of it. I painted it orange/gold and added mahogany veneer inserts in the panels and wood toned the light frames. The roof will be black. I am putting in a 409 for the power plant. I know it’s a Ford with a Chevy engine but I am trying to create a Beach Boys theme here….Surfin Safari/409……… The bed will be trimmed with the mahogany veneer too. More to come. Thanks for looking and I hope you like it. Dave

That is another really clever idea! Folks prove almost daily, there are always new things to create! Thanx for putting smiles on faces and for the step by step fotos!

Finished the interior. This is the only decent pic I have. I mocked it. I don't know where the seat came from but I extended the bottom of it. The door panels are made out of styrofoam plates of which I scribed the pleats and painted. The door handle and window crank are made out of wire and the knob on the window crank is a small glass bead. the crank is attached to a sliver of round stock. The armrest is made from sprue. I'm fighting with the headers now....I lost a few battles but I think I'm winning the war! More pics to come. Dave

What glue is used on styrofoam, I wonder? Water based, like the white or yellow "carpenters" glue can work, but pieces fall off fairly easily. Just curious, we need a tutorial on best glues for various jobs between different materials. Thanx for a superior project!

Just curious, we need a tutorial on best glues for various jobs between different materials. Thanx for a superior project! Thanks for the nice comment! When working with Styrofoam you must always use latex based products, anything else will melt the foam. I score it using the back of the knife and a straight edge. For the wire handles I poked a piece of wire thru the foam where I wanted the handles. After I put the handles thru the holes I put a dab of white windshield glue on the back. You can also use Elmers type water based glue. I used the same glue for the armrest. I could have drilled a couple holes in the back of the armrest and fit in a couple short pieces of wire and poked them thru the foam and glued them in that way too. You could also use a thin piece of styrene for a backing plate and poke the wires thru that and glue them in. Making the handles is tiny and tedious work, but I love the challenge of making parts. Thanks again, Dave
