This is my first attempt at a tutorial, But here we go!
Today we are starting the body adjustments to make an AWB out of this AMT 55 Nomad. I don't get real technical on measurements, I make sure they will work, and that both side match. If it eyeballs out good, it is good! I start by drawing my first vertical line as close to the door as I can without having to re-groove the door.Next I mark the horizontal cut line, I try to get far enough above the wheel well to keep the cut-out rigid. The rear vertical cut line should be close to the wheel, but not close enough to alter the opening. The drawing should look something like this. Note the 2 horizontal lines, the bottom one was to close to the wheel well for me. we will be using the top one.Next I mask off the cut area, and mark it with a sharpie. remnants of the sharpie line left after cutting will help determine necessary Minuit adjustments.By taping a straight edge along the horizontal line you can begin cutting. I use the back edge of a No.11 Exacto blade to repeatedly score the plastic until the cut is complete.I then use an exacto saw to cut the verticals.Remove the panel and clean up the edges.I then added a strip of styrene .020 x.080 to compensate loss from cutting the horizontal. sand it down to meet the outer body surface.I sized the panel alignmen by comparing it to a factory made AWB body. Cut, and install the wheel well.Insert the remaining piec of quarter panel centered in the hole.2 pieces if styrene .030 x .100 fill the gaps nicely.trim off the excess at the bottom, and sand everthing smooth.

Bill: You did a really clean job of altering the wheel base, one of the cleanest I have seen. My only question is what is the purpose of altering the wheel base on a car? I believe it has something to do with racing, but not being into racing I truly don't understand. Can you enlighten me?

The alteration helps transfer the weight and torque from the engine which done properly gets you down the track faster hope that helps a little ;D

I believe it has something to do with racing, but not being into racing I truly don't understand. Can you enlighten me? Well maybe a little, but not much. I'm a model builder, and not a drag racing expert. I believe it had something to do with the class you ran in. I think 125" wheel base or less was a specification in one class. If you shortened your wheel base, you could meet specs a larger car normally would not. I just like the way they look, and a little body work challenge is good for you. ;D ;D ;D Happy Modeling! Bill
