If it has a smooth surface it should work great for the hobby, but a lot of what I've seen of 3-D printers is the surface is kind porous and wouldn't work well for model parts. Well it would work but would require some surface prep to be smooth enough for models. The next question is how much detail will it produce. If you're trying to make some stromberg carbs and they turn out lookin like a pair of boots that wouldn't be worth the effort. You would need to see the finished product up close and personal to determine if it;s feasible. for modeling.

Especially the less expensive 3-d ones must have serious limitations. I feel waiting until the bugs are worked out, the raw material is more like styrene or resin cast, and software is up to coming up with truly fine detail, then buying makes sense. I kind of bemoan an era where one can pop in a program and come out with something and not have to do the actual work is wrong. However, already if one has the money one can simply by all the detailed parts today. I miss the days when a builder had to make everything oneself. A winning model may be just bought piecemeal and assembled.

I've heard, that there's a 3d metal printer in the works. Anyone know about it? Thoughts?
